IN this 90-minute workshop, documentary filmmaker and multimedia artist Nora Jane Long invites participants into a nuanced, honest conversation about ethics in non-fiction storytelling. Through the lens of her own creative portfolio, she explores the dynamic relationships between storyteller, subject, and audience and what it really means to practice care, respect, and responsibility across those lines.

Participants will watch curated clips that showcase both moments of ethical clarity and the complex gray areas inherent in real-world storytelling. Together, we’ll unpack the choices behind the camera: how power shows up in our processes, how consent can be ongoing, and how storytelling can shift from extractive to collaborative. This session will also address the ethical dimensions of digital and visual media more broadly, offering frameworks that apply beyond traditional documentary.

Whether you’re a filmmaker, photographer, writer, or simply someone who engages with stories, this workshop offers practical tools and reflective prompts to support you in telling more intentional, equitable, and impactful stories that honor those who live them and those who receive them.
